With 60 years' experience in geothermal development, and being home to 25 high-temperature geothermal systems, New Zealand can provide many examples of industry best practice and the University of Auckland’s Geothermal Institute is perfectly placed to help you achieve your geothermal goals.

New Zealand continues to lead the way in several areas of geothermal energy use and resource management:

  • Ngā Awa Purua is the world’s single largest geothermal turbine.
  • Ngātamariki is the largest pure binary plant in the world.
  • Kawerau has had the largest industrial direct use of geothermal energy in the world for over 50 years.
  • World-leaders at developing sophisticated software tools for 3D Geological and Geothermal Modelling.
  • Recognised as best in the world for geothermal drilling practice.

Our indigenous Māori community were the first adopters of geothermal energy in New Zealand, using geothermal energy in everyday life. Our land and water resources are of great significance to Māori and their guardianship (Kaitiakitanga). They continue to be actively involved in the development of New Zealand’s geothermal industry.
