The Geothermal Institute unites geothermal energy related expertise at the University of Auckland. It is home to one of the largest groups of geothermal energy related researchers anywhere in the world, and has staff with skills ranging from geochemistry to resource management law. The institute offers education, research and consulting services to the international geothermal community.

We offer students a range of qualifications to build their knowledge from Postgraduate Certificate level, all the way to doctoral study. These programmes involve important partnerships between other NZ organisations in the geothermal sector that provide guest lecturers and facilitate field trips for our Postgraduate Certificate and Master of Energy students. To help geothermal professionals up skill while working, we deliver industry training both in NZ and around the world. We are aiming to grow the number of short courses we teach and are happy to customise courses to suit client needs.

Our research capabilities are wide-ranging and can offer solutions (from fundamental to applied work) in areas from geoscience, to reservoir engineering, to process control and beyond. Our team are currently developing a new generation geothermal reservoir modelling code which will be open source. We look forward to seeing it applied to reservoirs around the world.

For more information about the research we do, please contact us or alternatively mark our annual New Zealand Geothermal Workshop on your calendar. This is held in November every year.

New Zealand is a world leader in geothermal energy and we are proud of our contributions. We want to help share NZ geothermal expertise with the world to support the global growth of geothermal energy use.
