Contact Energy

Contact Energy Limited (CEL) is the operator of the Wairakei and Ohaaki geothermal projects, two of New Zealand longest running geothermal projects. The Geothermal Institute has worked with CEL (and its predecessors) on modelling Wairakei and Ohaaki since 1985. The models have been used to assist CEL with field management and for planning future developments such as the recently completed Tauhara 2 project. Reports on model results have also been included in several successful applications for resource consents.

Some developments in modelling technology were made by the GI to meet the requirements of these models. For example, the first version of the EOS2 equation of state for TOUGH2, for mixtures of water and CO2, was developed to enable modelling of Ohaaki.

Tauhara Drilling Campaign

New Zealand / 2023

We supported Contact Energy with the drilling campaign at Tauhara. Using our reservoir model of the Wairakei-Tauhara geothermal system, calibrated to 70 years of production data, we provided forecast scenarios.

Reversing Carbon Emissions in Geothermal Energy Production

New Zealand / 2024 – 2027

We’re using innovative approaches to entrap harmful gases, particularly CO2, in a solid state, while enhancing energy production from geothermal resources.
