Summary

The Geothermal Institute has delivered its four-week Reservoir Modelling course at Reykjavik University’s Iceland School of Energy. Since 2018, the course has built global capability in geothermal reservoir simulation, combining lectures and labs to teach students how to model, forecast, and optimise geothermal systems for sustainable energy development.

Strengthening Global Geothermal Skills Through Teaching in Iceland

The Geothermal Institute is currently in Iceland delivering our intensive Reservoir Modelling course at the Reykjavik University’s Iceland School of Energy

Over the last four weeks, Ryan Tonkin, Theo Renaud and Michael Gravatt have been teaching students to develop practical skills in geothermal reservoir simulation – building conceptual models, calibrating 3d systems, forecasting for sustainable power generation, and running wellbore modelling exercises.

The course introduces students to the fundamentals of heat transfer and fluid flow in porous and fractured media, before progressing into 3D reservoir calibration, production history analysis, and forecasting for sustainable power generation. Students also take part in a wellbore modelling exercise, gaining experience in assessing geothermal well pressure and temperature profiles.

Since its launch in 2018, the course has brought students from across the world, equipping them with reservoir modelling skills essential for today’s geothermal industry demands.

Teaching in Iceland offers us a unique opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world examples. Like in Aotearoa New Zealand, geothermal energy is part of daily life in Iceland, from heating to electricity generation.

By the end of the course, students are better equipped to understand geothermal systems, make forecasts, and contribute to the global expansion of geothermal energy.

Find out more about our education programmes and prepare to join the next generation of geothermal professionals committed to a sustainable energy future.
